Nevermind, adding the framework search path did the trick :)
Thank you so much for this tutorial. This is the first one I've found that actually works.

ld: framework not found SDL
clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)

I could never be one to write off the possibilities of someone making it here in Japan, as my story is as much of a "series-of-fortunate-events" as it gets. But having said that, there are two things that yell "HURDLE" to me about your situation:

- Artists in Japan generally need fantastic Japanese to communicate their ideas etc.
- Degree's are super important in Japan

The first point is pretty self-explanatory. So if your Japanese is already fantastic - then you'll be fine on this point! However, if you're not quite as communicative as your potential future employer might expect you to be, that doesn't mean all hope is lost. Oftentimes you might find someone who speaks English, or even a foreign owned company that wouldn't find any issue with a lower-level language proficiency.

The second point however seems to me to be more of a critical issue. The Japanese visa acquisition system generally requires one to have a degree... otherwise you're not really "qualified" - Yes, That's ridiculous. I know. But that's how it is here. That piece of paper speaks volumes more to the people signing your visa papers than years of experience. However, I do know people who have been sponsored here by a company, without a degree, that managed to get a visa - so there's still hope. But boy it will be tough without a degree. Your best bet is to research research research and find a way in. There is generally always a way, and determination will find it for you!

I'm glad you're enjoying the blog. Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

It's been fun reading up on your experiences and struggles as you have moved to Japan.

I too am planning to live in japan in a few years and it really helps to give me insight on what things to expect.

Are there certain requirements or any tips you could give me?

My current line of work here in Australia is a Lead artist for a casino gaming machine company branch which is based in Europe Austria.

I haven't got any degrees but would quality of work and years experience in the industry help to make things easier?

Hi Ryan! Glad to hear you've been enjoying the blog!

I've been programming for quite some time, technically I dabbled in it when I was a kid (like, 12 years old) but I never really studied it until I was 19. So I guess it's been about 6 years now.

Although it's worth noting, that the game industry is super competitive. For some people, it can take 6 years but others can get in much quicker - and it's even tougher again if you're looking to live in a country that doesn't share your native language!

My only advice would be is that if you're interested, start making games TODAY. If you need a nudge in the right direction, ask away! Otherwise, there are plenty of resources online to help you.

Good luck!
